Please contact Dr. Arpi Bekmezian (bekmezian@peds.ucsf.edu)

We are seeking a medical student to help with a project investigating steroid prescription in the emergency department (ED) for children with acute asthma. Despite well-established literature and national guidelines, steroid treatment remains under-utilized and delayed in EDs. Our goals include first, to determine how often steroids are inappropriately delayed or omitted in the treatment of children with acute asthma in the ED. And second, to determine predictors of delayed or non-use of steroids in the ED among children with acute asthma.

The Job: Medical chart review, electronic database management, and data analysis. Minimum time requirement: 2 months. The student is encouraged to apply for funding through the school of medicine (e.g., summer research fellowship, quarterly or year long program).

The Rewards: The student will be encouraged to write and present their own abstracts for national meetings, and will be included as an author for any significant contributions to manuscripts. Experience in clinical research and quality improvement, and clinical exposure to pediatrics.

The Collaborators: Dr. Arpi Bekmezian (Pediatric Hospitalist), Dr. Ellen Weber (Emergency Medicine), Dr. Christopher Fee (Emergency Medicine), Dr. Michael Cabana (General Pediatrics).
