UCSF offers medical students a wealth of opportunities to do research.
Approximately 30% of the students in each class use the summer following
the first year to do a two-month project.
Some of these research projects are very successful and become the basis
for a thesis and graduation with in the M.D. with Distinction in a Pathway to Discovery.
A very small number of students start a part-time research project during
the first year. For summer research projects, begin looking for a sponsor
in January when the Deans office announces its summer research program.
If you wish to start a project during the year and require assistance
finding a sponsor, please feel free to email the program directors Dr. Dan Lowenstein or Dr. Urmimala Sarkar.
