UCSF IRB approval policy

UCSF offers medical students a wealth of opportunities to do research.

Approximately 30% of the students in each class use the summer following the first year to do a two-month project.

Some of these research projects are very successful and become the basis for a thesis and graduation with in the M.D. with Distinction in a Pathway to Discovery.

Programs include:

A very small number of students start a part-time research project during the first year. For summer research projects, begin looking for a sponsor in January when the Dean’s office announces its summer research program.

If you wish to start a project during the year and require assistance finding a sponsor, please feel free to email the program directors Dr. Dan Lowenstein or Dr. Urmimala Sarkar.
