Announcing the winner of the 2010 Dean's Postdoctoral Prize: Alexei Korennykh

The Dean’s Postdoctoral Prize Lecture is awarded to a UCSF postdoctoral fellow each year. The purpose of the award is to recognize the outstanding creative and independent research efforts of postdoctoral scholars and to highlight the contributions that postdoctoral scholars make to the scientific community. The 2010 winner, Alexei Korennykh will present his research the Parnassus and Mission Bay campuses on February 23rd and will receive a cash prize of $1000. Dr. Korennykh was selected both for impact of his research and his tenacity and courage as a researcher.

As a graduate student in chemistry at the University of Chicago, he became interested in biological enzymology. In 2006, he elected to conduct his postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Peter Walter at UCSF. His research in the Walter lab has lead to a breakthrough crystal structure of Ire1, which helps to elucidate the mechanism of the unfolded protein response (UPR). This novel double-helical oligomeric structure has explained many of the long-standing questions about Ire1 biology since it’s discovery in the Walter lab. This difficult structure could not have been solved except for Dr. Korennykh’s exquisite attention to detail and experimental fearlessness. His research has lead to multiple articles in Nature, invited talks at international research conferences, and two novel patent applications.

Apart from his outstanding research, Dr. Korennykh exemplifies the ideal UCSF researcher. His studies have been the result of collaborations he established among UCSF research groups, which take advantage of our unique and fertile collaborative environment. He has proved himself an effective researcher, a leader, and a team-spirited colleague.

We are honored to recognize his contribution to the UCSF community.
