Member Service and Participation Expectations

Members in good standing will:

  • Maintain the high level of work in education and teaching that qualified them for membership
  • Provide significant contributions toward advancing the AME mission
  • Actively participate in AME activities and attend AME events


Members annually document their participation and service in the following areas:

I. Participation in Academy Administration and Activities. (Minimum 10 hours per year, excluding direct teaching, currently required.) Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Serving as a chair and/or an actively participating member of an AME action group or committee.
  • Providing other AME administrative functions, e.g. serving on a search committee for an AME endowed chair or coaching potential applicants**
  • Furthering faculty development and improving teaching through AME co-sponsored activities, e.g. faculty development workshops, formal mentoring through the AME, and peer review of educational scholarship (ESCape, Education Showcase, Med Ed Grand Rounds)**
  • Serving as a liaison at activities related to the AME mission in other venues, e.g. representing the AME at selected academic conferences, membership on select institutional academic committees, mission-related education-focused grand rounds presentations, conducting a department-based workshop on documentation of educator activities, reviewing membership applications for sister academies, participating in the Academies Collaborative**
  • Providing significant contributions to AME-specific priorities and goals, e.g. significant contributions to Bridges project teams**

II. Academy Function Attendance. (>50% of activities over a 2-year period currently required.)

  • Academy-wide Meetings (3-4 per year; generally winter meeting is offered at numerous sites)
  • Education Showcase (one per year)
  • Induction of New Members (one per year)

We strive to balance the need to preserve a functional and cohesive community of educators with mounting faculty productivity and time pressures. To that end, we ask members to reflect proactively about their academic interests and commitments, and how these interface with the AME’s mission and goals.  In many cases, educational activities in which members will engage anyway-e.g., on a departmental or curricular level-would also fulfill AME service expectations.
