Abstract Submission Guidelines

Click here to submit an abstract. The submission deadline is February 10 at 5:00 pm.

To make submission easier, we recommend that authors prepare abstracts in advance, then cut and paste the text into the online survey. Click for a template and examples of past abstracts. Abstract word count should not exceed 300 words, including references, but excluding title and authors.

All posters will be digital and displayed on monitors in the Teaching and Learning Center (2nd floor, Parnassus Library). Poster specifications and templates will be available in February; see a sample of posters from the 2013 Symposium here.


Abstracts may be submitted in one of two categories:

  • 1) Curriculum Development Projects: Summaries of curricular innovations.
    2) Curriculum Evaluation/Educational Research Projects: Summaries of educational research or curricular evaluation.

If it is difficult to decide which category is most appropriate, please contact Amin Azzam, chair of the Academy Scholarship Committee, Amin.Azzam@ucsf.edu.

Authors will also be asked to indicate medical education areas the abstract addresses (i.e., undergraduate medical education (UME), graduate medical education (GME), and/or continuing medical education (CME), as well as the top three domains the abstract focuses on (click here for a list of domains).

Each accepted abstract will be scheduled as one of the following: (1) a digital poster presentation, which will require participation in a 60-minute moderated poster viewing session and a 15-minute un-moderated poster session, OR (2) a 15-minute oral presentation. (Please note: the durations of the poster sessions are approximate, and will be confirmed in March 2014.)

    1. Oral Presentations: These 15-minute oral presentations will take place from 8:30-10:30 am. The format of these sessions should include a presentation of the background, methods, results and discussion/conclusion with time for discussion and questions from the audience.


    2. Poster Sessions: Will be held in the Teaching and Learning Center from 12:15-4:30pm
  • Three moderated tours of posters and three brief un-moderated sessions are planned.
  • Authors will be assigned to one of these moderated sessions.
  • Posters will be grouped by subject matter to foster interaction between poster discussants and the audience. No other concurrent programming will be scheduled during these times to encourage attendees to visit the poster sessions and interact with the presenters.

The Scholarship Committee will determine the presentation format for each proposal based on the abstract topic and relationship to others submitted.


    Abstracts are organized into the following categories below. These categories mirror Glassick's criteria for scholarship in teaching and learning, which will be also used in the peer review process.

    Curriculum Evaluation:
    Purpose: Clearly describe the project's goals and objectives.

    Purpose: Clearly describe the project's hypothesis, goals and objectives.

    Background: Describe how the curriculum innovation was informed by knowledge of previous scholarly work or knowledge of educational principles.

    Background: Describe the project's importance, curricula (if study is curriculum evaluation), and how the research/evaluation plan was informed by knowledge of previous scholarly work or knowledge of educational principles.

    Methods: Describe the approaches used to teach in this setting and how these approaches have been adjusted to the particular features of the material, setting, and learners.

    Methods: Describe the research methods or methods of evaluation including subjects, protocol and measurement of outcomes.

    Evaluation Plan: Describe the outcomes that will tell you whether your curriculum is effective. Results: Describe the findings of the study/evaluation including response rate, results, and statistical testing where appropriate.
    Dissemination: Describe your plans for making the results of your curriculum project available to colleagues (talks, posters, publications, websites, etc.). Discussion: State concisely the data-driven conclusion of your study/evaluation and how the results of the project are being (or will be) made available to colleagues.
    Reflective Critique: Describe the steps taken to solicit feedback regarding your curriculum project and how it has been (or will be) modified based on the feedback.     You are encouraged to sign up for a pre-submission consultation of your abstract draft at ESCape, UCSF's Weekly Educational Scholarship Conference. Consultation sessions will take place on January 21, January 28, and February 4, and spaces will fill up fast.
